The Hunters

This is my abstracted and pared down version of The Hunters in the Snow, also known as The Return of the Hunters, a 1565 oil-on-wood painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. My version shows a simplified view of the left hand part of the painting. This is one of the most famous paintings in the world, familiar to many in Christmas cards.

Whilst looking at artworks in London I made a note to myself to do a painting using Bruegel’s colour palette for this painting, which is restricted but still incredibly energetic. I couldn’t wait to get in the studio and try it out. I really love this one, hope you do too. It is painted on canvas stretched over an internal wooden frame and is ready to hang.
